Best Tarmac Restorer – The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide 2024

We really hope that you love the products that we recommend. Just so you know, ToolsReview may collect a share of sales or be compensated through the links on this page, but we think it’s a fair trade for the long hours of research that we put in.

Tarmac is regularly the go-to choice for driveways and paths – it is relatively durable, easy to lay and will give you a nice, smooth driveway in the end! However, over time you can find that tarmac begins to show its age. Signs of this include cracks, discolouration, a “worn” looking surface” and uneven colouring over the surface. This can not only make the tarmac look tired, but we find it will then make the front of your home look tired too! We understand that you probably won’t be wanting to replace your tarmac drive or pathway – this can be costly, time-consuming and messy – so what if we told you there was another option?

A tarmac restorer is the best way to get your tarmac looking and feeling like new – without the time, money and energy that would go into completing replacing the tarmac! The best thing about a tarmac restorer is that it isn’t just going to sit on top of the tarmac and hide all of the problems underneath – it is designed to actually help restore the resins and properties of the tarmac. This is so important if you want to extend the life of your tarmac restorer as well as revive its appearance.

In A Hurry?

If you are fed up of arriving home to a drab and dreary driveway, or sick of tripping up over that crack or hole that you have been meaning to fill in then look no further! Here are some of the best tarmac restorers – and everything that you need to know before you buy!

Ingredients

One of the most important things that you need to look at with tarmac restorers is the ingredients that are included and how this is going to impact on the quality of the product as well!

Ideally, you want a tarmac restorer that is going to offer protection but also be porous enough to still let some water through. This is the best way to avoid water pooling on the surface if it isn’t completely level! It also helps to avoid the water running off as much into bedding areas or your lawn which can cause waterlogging and damage your plants or grass. However, try to find a balance between a porous surface and also one which will seal the tarmac underneath enough to protect it.

We would also recommend looking out for tarmac restorers that are going to replace the resins in the tarmac to help to strengthen the materials again and reduce the chances of cracks and holes developing. Ideally, you also want them to be solvent free as these are going to be the longest-lasting products.

If you want a long-lasting finish for your tarmac restorer, then look out for models that come with fungicide included, as this will help to prevent algae and weed growth on your tarmac! This reduces the cleaning and weed maintenance you have to do and of course the overall finish that your drive will be able to maintain!

TOP TIP: When looking at the ingredients, it is always worth checking to see whether the tarmac restorer is designed to be in a high-traffic area or not. Some are only designed for areas that aren’t regularly going to be driven on etc so aren’t really suitable for driveways.

Drying Time

We would definitely recommend looking at the drying time and application time for each of the different products. This is really going to impact how easy it is for you to get the job done and also how easy it is going to be for you to set some time aside to start working!

Many will need between around two to four hours between coat applications and then another six to ten hours after this to dry properly. As you can see, this amount of time builds up, which is why you are going to need a decent amount of time to get the job done. Every tarmac restorer that we found needs the weather to be dry for it to seal properly too. Check how long the tarmac restorer needs to remain dry and of course check whether you can rely on that weather forecast!

Coverage

To make sure that you are getting good value for money, check out the coverage that you are going to get for the price and size of container that you are purchasing! Some manufacturers will state the coverage of their container whereas others will state a “per litre” measurement which makes it much easier to compare!

We found that most models offer between around 2 and 5mᒾ per litre! Measuring the size of your drive is going to be easy – simply measure the length in metres and then the width and multiply them together! The average driveway in the UK is going to be about 10m by 4m – but obviously this can range massively!

Additional Features

Now that you know the key things that you need to consider and look at before you make your purchase – here are some of the additional features that we felt were just as important!

  • UV Stabilised – If you currently have a discoloured, faded tarmac pathway or drive then you know how dismal this can really look! That is why it is so important that you opt for a tarmac restorer that is UV stabilised. These models come with ingredients that keep them protected from the effects of the sun, so that they will not fade and crack as quickly!
  • Colour – Make sure to check the colour of your tarmac restorer before you purchase it. Tarmac isn’t just going to be black, there are types of tarmac that are red too, so look at the different colour options and find one that is going to be right to match your tarmac. Also decide whether you want a matt finish or a sheen finish for your driveway, as different restorers come with different “looks” once they are dry!
  • Tools included – Look whether the tools that you are going to need to apply your tarmac restorer actually come with the tub! If they do this is going to save you money and will help to ensure that you are getting the right tools for the job! Some will need to be thrown away afterwards whereas others can be washed and used again – even better value for money!
  • Texture – If your tarmac path or driveway is quite sloped then you probably benefit from the grip that comes with the tarmac to stop the surface from being too slippy! If that sounds like you then look out for tarmac restorers that guarantee they will not change the texture of your tarmac. We really like tarmac restorers that come with anti-slip finishes just to be on the safe side!
  • Multiple uses – Some of the best tarmac restorers can be used on both concrete and tarmac! They can also be used indoors as well as outdoors so you will be able to use them in kitchens and bathrooms too!
  • Oil and petrol protection – If you are planning on using your tarmac restorer on a driveway then why not opt for a model that is going to come with stain protection. These models will even be able to create a barrier against oil and petrol to avoid this damaging the appearance of your drive!

Applying Tarmac Restorer

The one downside to tarmac restorers is that they are only as good as the person that is applying them! You could purchase the best tarmac restorer around and if you apply it wrong then it won’t be nearly as effective. So here are some of our tips on how to best apply your tarmac restorer.

  • Preparing the surface – For best results, it is really important to prepare the surface correctly. Sweep any loose debris away and remove any weeds or algae from the surface. You also need to make sure to clean the surface as best as possible before application.
  • Most Tarmac Restorers are going to need two coats to be able to be effective. This is definitely worth checking for, as models that require two coats are obviously going to be more expensive and time consuming to apply than those that only need one coat!
  • Application – Look at what you are going to need to use to apply your tarmac restorer. Some are going to be really easy to apply whereas others are going to be a little more complicated! Bear in mind that whatever you use to apply the tarmac restorer – you will probably find that it isn’t much good for anything else after the application! Most can be applied simply using a roller or a paint brush!
  • We found that the best way to apply most tarmac restorers is to use a brush for the edges where you need a more delicate finish and then the roller for the central parts of the driveway so that you can apply it more quickly! Just make sure to overlap the two areas so that there isn’t an obvious line in the final finish!
  • Temperature – As you will know, tarmac is affected by the change in temperature outside, so this means that there are only going to be certain temperatures that you are able to apply your tarmac restorer. If tarmac gets too hot, then it will become softer which will stop the tarmac restorer from sealing properly. Most manufacturers recommend looking out for days where the weather is below 20℃ before applying! Some need weather below 11℃ which is going to be even harder to find in summer! Others need the weather to be over 10℃ (you really can’t win!) so make sure to check the details on this and pick a product that best suits you!
  • Crack repairing – We definitely think it is worth opting for a tarmac restorer that is also going to be able to repair small cracks and holes in your tarmac. Most are going to be able to do this but some can’t so it is definitely worth checking for! Just bear in mind that even the best tarmac restorers are only going to be able to repair small cracks, nothing substantial, so you may need another solution first for big cracks before applying the tarmac restorer.
  • Keep Off! – Once you have applied your tarmac restorer it is really important that you stay off the surface for at least the amount of time that the manufacturers recommend. This helps to ensure that the product seals correctly so is going to offer the best protection and also look the best too!

TOP TIP: Whatever tool you use to apply the tarmac restorer, we would definitely recommend using something with a long handle so that you don’t have to crawl around the floor whilst you are working!
