Garden Multi-Tool

Getting your garden just how you want it is always going to involve work. You would be surprised if you actually stopped to add up how many hours you have spent trimming, cutting, digging and strimming! But worse than the time that you spend – have you ever actually stopped to think about the amount of money that you have invested in different tools to try and get the job done! Unless you have a very small garden, it is rare that you are going to only ever need one tool to get your outdoor space looking just right, which is why we think a garden multi-tool is the perfect solution for almost everyone!

A garden multi-tool is going to come with multiple attachments that will allow you to work on various different jobs in your garden – all with the same tool. Not only will this save you money from having to purchase all the different tools separately, but it is also going to be more reliable and take u p much less storage space in your shed or garage!

What Can A Garden Multi Tool Do?

The jobs that you will be able to complete with your garden multi tool really depend on the attachments that come with the model that you are looking to purchase! Different models come with different attachments that are able to complete different tasks, so make sure to think about what you use in your garden most regularly! Here are some of the applications that we have found:

  • Chainsaw
  • Brush cutter
  • Strimmer
  • Hedge trimmer (some even come with an extending pole so they create a pole hedge trimmer)
  • Grass trimmer
  • Pruner
  • Lawn edger

TOP TIP: Make sure to look at the types of blades and the blade lengths that you will get with your multi tool. This, as well as the different attachments, will have a massive impact on the different jobs that you are going to be able to use it for!

In A Hurry?

We have no doubt that by now we have persuaded you that you need a garden multi tool – when we saw all they could do we had to go out and purchase one as well! So here are the key features that you need to consider before you buy so that you can make sure you purchase a long lasting and useful tool!

Battery, Corded or Petrol Powered

Most of the garden multi tools that you will find are cordless – but there are a couple of corded models out there that are worth considering too. We really like the cordless models as they offer much more flexibility in being able to work anywhere and you never need to worry about the cord becoming tangled or being cut. However, there are pros to the corded models too – you know that they will be ready to work whenever you are and you tend to get more power for the same amount of money! If you do decide to purchase a corded model, just make sure to look at the length of cable that you are getting.

If you decide that a cordless model is more right for you, then you will be able to choose between a battery powered model and a petrol garden multi tool. A battery powered model is usually going to be a little cheaper and they will be cheaper to run as well. This makes them a perfect “middle ground” between the corded models and the petrol powered models. However, a petrol powered model is going to offer more power and work for as long as you need it to (providing you have the fuel) whereas a battery powered model will normally only last for around 30-40 minutes on one charge.

TOP TIP: If you decide to opt for a battery powered model then we would definitely recommend looking out for a Li-Ion battery! These are going to charge quicker and last longer when they are being used!

Power

The type of garden multi tool that you purchase is largely going to determine the amount of power that you are able to expect from your tool. When looking at the power, you need to consider the overall power and also the RPM (Rotations Per Minute) as this will give you a good indication of the quality of the tool and whether it is going to be able to complete the jobs that you have in mind.

Some of the best models will come with a 3HP (horse power) engine which is a great amount of power, whereas other models come with just a 1HP engine (and others in between. You may also find that instead of being measured in horsepower, the amount of power is measured in kW instead! As a comparison, we found that kW tended to start at around 1.2kW and went up to around 4kW.

Don’t forget to also look at the RPM – this is the way to judge how fast the blades are moving on each of the attachments and therefore how quickly they are going to be able to get the job done. We found that most RPMs ranged between around 3500RPM and nearly 10,000RPM.

Handle Length

One of the key features that we have found will have a real impact on the jobs that you complete and how easily you can do these, is the handle length. A longer handle is going to make it much easier to reach taller hedges with ease (and avoid you having to climb up a ladder). However, a really long handle length is also going to make it more difficult to work with your garden multi tool and keep it under control. Not only this but it makes it impossible to use for those more intricate jobs. This is why we really like the models that come with a telescopic handle, or different handle lengths for each attachment. This makes it much easier to get just the right length that you need for the job in hand.

Some of the best garden multi tools will come with a length of over 3m! This is a length that is competitive with some of the stand alone hedge trimmers so is definitely worth considering.

Setting Up Your Garden Multi Tool

We would definitely recommend looking at how easy it is to work your garden multi tool – this involves setting it up, switching between the different attachments and just generally working the tool.

Most models come with attachments that simply have to be aligned and clipped into place, whereas others require a tool that will allow you to “lock” the attachments into the main base of the tool. Make sure to check how easy this is going to be as we found some that were quite fiddly and stiff – you find yourself spending more time adjusting between the tools than actually using them.

Then look at how easy it actually is to use your tool. We like electric start ups as these are much easier to work with than pull cord starters. It is also really important that you check for a model that comes with a safety latch as this will stop your tool from being switched on by mistake and avoid any accidents!

The Best Garden Multi Tool Features

If you are looking for the best garden multi tool and have a number of jobs that you are on a mission with and wanting to get done then look no further – here are some of those additional features that we would recommend you looking out for!

  • Added Extras – Some of the best models come with additional PPE like helmets and goggles, harnesses and belts and even tool kits with additional blades and nylon strings! Although these kits will normally be more expensive, you will save money in the long run by having everything purchased at once so this is worth looking for!
  • Handle – Whatever attachment you have connected at any particular time, you are always going to be holding the same handle! This means that it needs to be really long lasting and durable but also comfortable too! We like the handles that are covered in rubber or silicone as these are going to be soft enough to avoid fatigue but also strong enough to withstand regular use! Although the foam covered handles are going to be the most comfortable, we found that they can wear quite easily!
  • Harness – If you do decide to opt for a model that comes with a harness, then make sure to check the quality of the harness and whether you are going to be able to wear it for extended periods of time. Double straps will help to share the weight over both of your shoulders and if these straps are padded then that is even better! All the harnesses will be adjustable, but we really like the models that come with quick-release from the main tool – this will allow you to disconnect the tool whilst keeping the harness on which is a massive help when working on a bigger job!
  • Weight – Garden multi tools are going to be slightly heavier than some of the smaller tools that you may be used to using around your garden. This is why it is important to go for a lighter model as they will help to reduce fatigue so that you can work for longer periods of time!
  • Quick charging – Look out for models that come with a powerful charger that is going to be quick to charge your battery packs so that you can get back to work.
  • Additional battery packs – If you know that you have a lot of jobs to do around your garden then why not look for models that come with additional battery packs (or at least the option of purchasing additional battery packs).
  • Replaceable blades – We would definitely recommend looking out for models that come with replaceable blades, or at least blades that can be sharpened. This will help you to ensure that you get the best value for money with your tool and that it will be long lasting too!
  • Rotating head – This is a feature that we only found with a few of the garden multi tools but it is well worth looking out for! A model that comes with a rotating head will allow you to adjust the tool to suit the job that you are completing, making it easier to use and also suitable for an even wider range of jobs!
  • Build Materials – We would definitely suggest that you look at the materials that your garden multi tool has been made from. We found that most models are made from steel or aluminium. Steel is going to be stronger and more durable, just make sure that whatever choice you make the metalwork is powder coated so that it is not affected by rust.
  • Fuel tank – If a petrol powered model is right for you then make sure to look at the size of the tank and how easy it is to refill. This is important if you are wanting to get back to work quickly and avoid wasting time!

Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty will you get with a garden multi tool?

The warranties with garden multi tools range quite considerably so this is certainly worth looking at. Some only came with a one year warranty, whereas other models come with a three or four year warranty! It is also important to check exactly what the warranty covers because there are so many different parts involved!

How should you maintain a garden multi tool?

It is really important that you maintain each of the parts of your garden multi tool if you are wanting it to be long lasting. Some aspects of the maintenance are really simple – like cleaning down each of the attachments between use to make sure there are no parts with dirt and debris left on them. Other maintenance is going to take a little longer, such as oiling the moving parts and connections in the tool every few uses.
