If you are ready to be rid of those frustrating, limiting and potentially dangerous power cords when you are strimming your garden then what you need is a battery strimmer. A battery powered strimmer (otherwise known as a cordless strimmer) is the perfect tool to allow you to cut and edge your lawn without the hassle of worrying about having to plug a tool in and trail a wire behind you on the way! These versatile tools will allow you to work pretty much anywhere – even in those long forgotten corners of your garden – and the only effort you have to put in is making sure that the battery is fully charged between uses!
A battery strimmer can be used in all aspects of your gardening – although they are mostly used for grass, many can also be used for softer foliage too and even brambles! They are designed to be able to tackle longer grass too – so if your lawn has got slightly out of hand then don’t worry…your battery strimmer will be able to handle it!
We have covered a range of battery powered strimmers in our buyers guide to help you find the best battery strimmer for you and your garden!

In A Hurry?
Garden looking a little unkempt? Lawn turning into more of a jungle? Just cut through yet another power cable to your lawn mower or your corded strimmer? Look no further….here is all the essential information that you need to buy the right tool for the job…and quickly!
Power and Battery
By far the first thing that you need to think about is the power that you are going to get from your battery strimmer! Originally, you would have often found that battery strimmers were able to offer less power than corded options, but this isn’t necessarily the case anymore. Obviously, there are still some models that this applies to, but we feel confident we will be able to find you a battery strimmer more than up to the task.
You will usually find that the power your battery strimmer is able to offer is measured in volts. Some of the best models come with just under 40v of power, whereas smaller models come with just 18v – this is quite a difference so is definitely worth considering! Generally, the more powerful a battery strimmer is the higher the rpm (rotations per minute – we will look at this in more detail below) and also the more strength that the tool will have to be able to cut through coarser foliage!
You also want to look at the type of battery that has been used and the battery life that it is going to be able to give you. The longer the battery life, the longer you are going to be able to work with your strimmer. The best batteries will be lithium-ion models that will charge quicker but also last longer! We found some models that will only last for around 20 minutes on one battery whereas others will last for up to 60 minutes continuous use!
TOP TIP: Don’t forget to also check how long it is going to take to actually charge the battery. Some models only take around 90 minutes for a full charge but others are much longer than this! We found some that take up to 6 hours to fully charge!
Cutting Speed and Cutting Width
The cutting speed and width is largely going to impact on the amount of time that it is going to take you to get the job done – whatever that may be. As we mentioned above, the cutting speed will be measured in rotations per minute (the amount of times the blade rotates in one minute). The higher the rpm the more grass that is going to be cut in one go – we found that rpms on battery strimmers tends to range from between 5000rpm and 9000pm (both of which is pretty high). The cutting swathe (or width) that you are going to get will normally come in at around 30cms but there are some slight variations with this. This is the area of grass that the blade is going to be able to reach so it gives you an idea of how many strokes of the garden you are going to have to do.
TOP TIP: We really like models that come with varying cutting speeds as this is going to make it much easier to achieve a more professional finish as you can adjust the speed depending on the area that you are working with!
Size and Weight
The size and weight of your battery strimmer is going to affect how easy it is going to be to work with. The longer your strimmer, the larger area you are going to be able to cover with ease. This is also the best way to reduce the amount that you have to bend down when working. However, it also makes them slightly more cumbersome to work with, which can cause some problems!
Look out for models that come with a telescopic handle – that way you will be able to adjust the handle so that it is the perfect height for you to work with and reduce fatigue in your back. Not only that but a telescopic handle can be extended to full length to access those hard to reach places. We found that sizes tend to range from around 800mm up to around 1400mm.
We found that battery strimmer weights tended to range between around 3.5kgs and 8kgs. A lighter model is going to be much easier to work with for longer periods of time.

Design
It is really important to look at the overall design of your battery strimmer, because the different designs are partly what makes some of the best battery strimmers stand out from the rest.
One of the things that you need to look at is the handle of the battery strimmer, as this is the part that you are going to be holding and in contact with the most. You need a handle that is going to have a soft, yet firm grip that is going to be easy to keep hold of – particularly if you get warm when you are working. Look out for rubber grips as these will be comfortable but durable too. We particularly like battery strimmers that come with two handles, many of these models feature an additional handle down the length of the strimmer so that you can get better control of your battery strimmer, offering a more professional finish.
When looking at the design, you also want to think about the different materials that the battery strimmer is made from. Ideally you want a model that is made from aluminium or stainless steel. Aluminium is going to be your lightest material choice, whilst still being strong…steel is slightly stronger but does have the potential to rust which is one downside. It is quite common to find parts of the strimmer will be made from plastic – this is fine as long as it isn’t any parts that will be taking any force or pressure.
TOP TIP: Some of the best battery strimmers even come with wheels which will allow it to also work as a mower (for small areas) or just give you extra control so that you can get an even straighter line.
The Best Battery Strimmers
By now you should know the power, speed and battery that you are going to need from your battery powered strimmer, so here are the additional features to consider if you want the best battery strimmer.
- Adjustable strimmer head – If you want to get the most for your money, then look out for a strimmer head that can be adjusted. Not only will this make it much easier to work with but it means that you can switch between using it as a strimmer and then a lawn edger!
- Adjustable/removable blades – We really like battery strimmers that come with the option of being able to remove the blades and replace them as necessary. This will allow you to use sharper blades for tricker areas and replace the blade as it becomes blunt.
- Variable power modes – If you have a number of different jobs to complete (or maybe a slightly overgrown wilderness to deal with) then having a battery strimmer with a turbo mode is going to help you to get the job done! Just consider how this is going to impact the battery life!
- Guard – All good quality battery strimmers will come with a guard, not just to protect yourself but to protect the moving parts of the tool too! Some even come with professional guards which are bigger and offer more protection. We really like models with guards that fold down so that you can protect not only yourself but plants in the garden that you don’t want to trim.
- Brushless motor – If you are wanting a high quality battery strimmer that is going to be long lasting then it is worth looking out for a brushless motor. The reduced friction will lead to a longer lasting motor and therefore a longer lasting machine!
- Removable battery – In our opinion, one of the key things to check is whether you plug in the whole machine or whether you can remove the battery to charge this separately. Otherwise, you could end up with your whole strimmer sitting in your house whilst it recharges.
- LED Screen – Some of the best battery strimmers come with LED screens so that you can check the setting that you are working on and also the battery life that you have got left!
- Multiple battery packs – Some of the really top-end models come with multiple battery packs or the option to purchase different battery packs that can give you over 500 minutes of charge! These models are going to be much more expensive and therefore are more suited to a professional.
- Automatic cord feed – If you have a bad back, or just can’t be bothered bending down every time the cord slips, then look out for models that come with an automatic cord feed.
- Noise levels – If you have used a strimmer before then you will know that they can be quite loud. Look out for models with minimum vibrations and sound minimising technology if you want to save your ears (and avoid disrupting your neighbours).
- Multi-tool compatible batteries – If you have a number of power tools that you work with then it may be worth looking for a battery strimmer that is going to have a battery pack compatible with other tools!
- Additional blades – The blades on battery strimmers are going to wear relatively quickly in comparison to other blades, so look out for models that come with additional blades to save you money. Some will come with a 10 pack of additional blades so you won’t need to worry about purchasing replacements for a long time! It is also worth looking whether the battery strimmer will be compatible with standard blades or whether it needs the manufacturer’s own!

Frequently Asked Questions
What warranties do battery strimmers come with?
We found that most battery strimmers will come with around a 2 year warranty. There are some models that only come with a 12 month warranty but we would recommend looking for longer than this as they aren’t cheap tools! Some battery strimmers come with up to a 5 year warranty which is a great way to offer you real reliability!
How long will a battery strimmer run for?
Battery powered strimmers will have run times from around 15 minutes up to around 90 minutes which is quite a variation. Remember that this is continuous run time so it is actually longer than you think! Consider the size of your garden and the types of jobs that you are wanting to complete. For example, edging is going to take quite a bit longer as it is a job that requires more care!
